I had been woke a few times by wind doing its best to dislodge us, I am sure it was not to bad but at three in the morn with tent flapping it felt more dramatic. Anyway we survived.
Having nothing to cook with made the lack of breaky easy to do. We got moving around 7,packed up and away at 7.45.
The walk started with a down to Heddon Mouth and a wake up killer climb to East Cleave.
We continued fairly hungry, the mixed dry porridge oats and sugar we had did not fill us .
The weather was amazingly mild ,which helped with the sweating especially climbing the highest point of the South West Coast Point ....Great Hangman at 318 m.
The height gain made an easy down apart from the mud, Little Hangman hill looked more dramatic than its big brother. I wondered if they actually hung folk here in the past.
In Combe Martin we hunted food.Cheap unbranded choc tasted like continental expensive choc to our deprived taste buds. We sat against a closed cafe on the desolate seaside front eating crisps and cheap energy drinks. I booked the hostel in Ilfracombe five miles on.
We took the old coast road to the scenic Widmouth harbour. Lovely place spoilt by a caravan park.
The route took us around small headlands where at Hele Bay we had a good climb for a view over the Ilfracombe,Longtailed tits flitted in the trees taking my mind off the more up ....great!
Once UP we dropped to the town. The harbour was dominated by the new Hurst sculpture of the contraversal pregnant sword brandishing woman.
We found the hostel which was fairly busy. For a basic dorm bed was £13.50 .When going in the room a disappointed chap in there was was not to chatty and disappeared on our arrival. We smelt so I was not surprised.
We bagged up a load of washing and for a fiver wr haf it washed and dried ...luxury!
We popped to see the sculpture before getting a food shop.I didn't realise the pregnant woman was so tall.
We spent the evening chatting , listening to a long term resident get slowly drunker and play the guitar . It was a good evening, more social.
