I cannot say I really enjoyed today, It felt awkward and at times boring.
We started as normal, getting away about 7.45. The first beach jogger passed by as we struck camp.
Weight again walked the beach to what appeared visually toward Westward Ho but the river Taw prevents that. Instead the journey heads up river to Barnstaple. Before that a walk in army training grounds Braunton Marshes and rough track and path to Braunton.
We passed small communities of house boats and various other craft in varying stages of neglect to ruined.
In Braunton we headed for the not so super Tescos store before a cycle path come other route Tarka Path dictated our direction.
I cannot say it was fun but if I had had binoculars I may of been able to see more than the odd egret. Apparently spoonbills are resident here. Numerous other birds picked at hawthorne berries.
Crossing the Taw we headed away from route again for lunch in the little known eating establishment called McDonalds. It was packed .
We met up with the route, an old railway track now cycle route.
We chugged on . Numerous cycles passing us. We sheltered in a wattle and dorb hut by a picnic site just passed the old Yelland Power Station. We chatted to another walker, a local who was listening to the footie on a small radio. A few more showers got us in the open later.
Generally we were limited at where to pitch. We lacked water. We found a spot in the shadow of the Torbridge A39. I left J with packs and half jogged to Bideford for water. I was up against the dimming light. Once I returned I need not of worried about lack of light as the yellow glow of street lights on our dubious pitch site.
Once pitch J was nervious that we would be moved on. We were away from the main path but still dogs found us bringing attention to our dwelling.Torch flash against our tent made for uneasy relaxed evening for J. Sounds of people talking also made for restlessness. I must admit it was not the most relaxed but felt we were ok for the evening.
Josh cooked tagletelli and sauce, not easy to eat with a spoon.
I blogged this, tired having walked over 20 miles.
4400 mile backpack of the Great British National Trails in one continuous walk .This includes Section One- 3700 miles of the National Trails of England and Wales , all 15 trails , Section 2- a 700 miles of the 4 Scottish Long Distant Paths. This is one walk , completed by linking trails by walking inbetween using lesser trails, lanes , etc.
