7th NOV.Woke up about 2am to listen to the Radio 4 coverage of the USA election.... yes ,I know I am sad! Fairly inconclusive as to what was happening so I dozed catching up every couple of hours. When Ohio went to Obama it was obvious he had won. Around 6.30 I listened to his winning speech, relieved. We packed up and was walking at 7.45. The lower coastal tree path was diverted to the longer farm track route. We walked up via sweet chestnut trees and leaf lined path, we hunted for the chestnuts but only found a handful of fairly small stunted ones , some little blighters had nibbled quite a few. After track skirting farms and field we headed in and out of woodland stopping at the Sisters Fountain for a drink of spring water, if it was good enough for Joseph of Arimathea , whoever he was, it was good enough for me.We sat snackless while an crumb expectant robin bobbed about our feet obviously used to walkers dropping bits whilst having a break at the stone cross stood above the spring. We felt so guilty that we dug out porridge oats. Walking on we passed a team of tree surgeons who I asked if they were felling ash, no they were culling rhododendrons. We discovered their work further on, dieing and cut shrubs lining our route with healthy specimens. Most of the route was pretty dry underfoot which meant easy to pleasant walking. We popped in and out with stream and waterfall quenching any thirst. We lacked snacks so made a coffee with the last of our meths, as fuel not to drink! Hannah , Age Uk ,contacted us via phone to see how we were doing. Foreland Point, the most northerly point came and went, we did not go to the light house and due to being lazy and wanting to get food in LYNMOUTH. We could see Lynmouth/Lynton a couple of miles on as we descended to it. Arriving in the touristy lower Lynmouth we wondered around seeking chips, eventually finding the Esplanade fish chip shop near the victorian cliff lift connecting with the upper Lynton. The walls of the sit down area were lined with certificates. and when the fish and chips arrived in cardboard box they were excellent . Coffee there was crap though and expensive. Walking on we were puzzled how to get up the cliff to LYNTON, eventually asking the lass in the lift kiosk and being told that the path was closed due to tree clearance. We were not tempted to take the lift after our expensive lunch so walked up a short stint via steep road then another path back to join our route. I was sure folk coming up the offical path had been down below with us and the lass in the kiosk had been telling porky pies. The valley of the Rocks was truely full of rocks and ...... er goats!? Again some of the route was cut off and diverted due to landslip so we found our way via a toll lane through the Lee Abbey retreat, some sort of religous affair which looked pleasant and worth retreating too. After Woody Bay the path was much like the Ceridigion Path but with more trees. We knew we would be wild camping but were unsure where exactly and it depended on reasonably level ground. We filled our water container on route. Before Heddon Mouth on Highveer point Josh sussed out a flat but exposed spot alittle of the main path. I checked the weather forecast to ensure no gale was going to catch us out then we pitched ensuring extra pegs were deployed and guys. It was good to climb into the tent, I had had trouble with my feet today and had to stop a few times to tighten my boots. Our socks after six days of wear were abit flat and needed a freshen up, going down hill had compacted my big toe and the nail felt as if it would fall off soon. As darkness fell town lights from Wales twinkled with the Foreland lighthouse flash. With only biscuits to eat we had a redundant tea, no meths meant no hot drinks or hot food now or in the morning. We had a game of chess before falling asleep , my election listening taking its toll.
